Familie Weiss ist mittendrin im ganz normalen Hollywood-Wahnsinn. Kinderstar Benji (Evan Bird) kann mit seinen dreizehn Jahren schon auf eine Drogenkarriere zurückblicken. Tochter Agatha (Mia Wasikowska) hat vor Jahren das Haus der Familie in Brand gesteckt. Frisch aus der Psychiatrie entlassen, stürzt sie sich in eine Affäre mit dem Chauffeur Jerome Fontana (Robert Pattinson) und sucht Benjis Nähe, sehr zum Missfallen ihres Vaters Stafford (John Cusack). Der Guru arbeitet gerade an seinem neuen Buch. Nebenbei behandelt er die alternde Schauspielerin Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore), die vom Geist ihrer Mutter verfolgt wird, seit sie in einem Remake unbedingt die Rolle spielen will, die ihre Mutter einst berühmt machte...
Regisseur David Cronenberg gelingt mit 'Maps to the Stars' eine Gratwanderung zwischen bissiger Satire und emotionalem Psychodrama. Großartig gespielt, bitterböse, entlarvend. 'Maps to the Stars' lief im offiziellen Wettbewerb der Filmfestspiele in Cannes 2014. Julianne Moore wurde auf dem Festival für ihre großartige Darstellung als beste Schauspielerin mit der 'Goldenen Palme' ausgezeichnet.
The Weiss family is right in the middle of the normal Hollywood madness. Child star Benji (Evan Bird) can already look back on a drug career at the age of thirteen. Daughter Agatha (Mia Wasikowska) set fire to the family's house years ago. Freshly released from a psychiatric ward, she plunges into an affair with chauffeur Jerome Fontana (Robert Pattinson) and seeks Benji's closeness, much to the displeasure of her father Stafford (John Cusack). The guru is currently working on his new book. Along the way, he deals with aging actress Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore), who is haunted by her mother's ghost since she desperately wants to play the role that once made her mother famous in a remake...
With 'Maps to the Stars', director David Cronenberg manages to walk a tightrope between biting satire and emotional psychodrama. Brilliantly acted, bitterly angry, revealing. 'Maps to the Stars' was screened in the official competition of the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and Julianne Moore was awarded the Palme d'Or for Best Actress at the festival for her great performance.
