Frankreich, kurz vor Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Auf der Suche nach neuem Talent entdeckt der Clown George Footit (James Thierrée) den aus der Sklaverei entflohenen 'Chocolat' (Omar Sy), der mit einem kleinen Wanderzirkus durchs Land reist. Die beiden Außenseiter freunden sich an und entwickeln eine gemeinsame Bühnenshow, die schnell zu einem großen Zuschauermagneten wird. Auftritte in den größten Zirkushäusern von Paris machen Footit und Chocolat schließlich landesweit bekannt. Doch der große Ruhm treibt nicht nur einen Keil in die Freundschaft der beiden, sondern zieht auch die Aufmerksamkeit der Polizei auf sich. Chocolat muss feststellen, dass er viele Feinde hat, die den Erfolg eines schwarzen Künstlers nicht dulden werden...
